Both Directors have many years of senior executive experience in the British rail industry, leaving different sections of the then British Rail near the end of 1996. They established a highly successful working relationship back in the ‘80s and have continued this in their new company.

Kevin Preston, a Chartered Engineer with a BSc in Aeronautical Engineering, joined the Research & Development Division of BR in 1969, after gaining design and practical experience in the helicopter industry. He led many innovative projects during his time there and moved, in 1988, to head up the Vehicle Systems Group of 29 experts.

He championed the development of on-train monitoring systems, including those for passenger counting, and is one of the foremost experts in this field. His expertise covers both hardware and software.

Since Demon Information Systems Limited was established, he has produced entirely new software for the analysis of data from the system. Most recently, he has designed and procured the new generation hardware and written all new software to accompany it.

Tony Smale had a thirty year career in railway operations, asset management and marketing, culminating in three years with West Anglia Great Northern Railway. His last post there was as Project Director for the sale of the franchise; previously, he had been Planning & Marketing Manager, in which post he devised and implemented the Cambridge to London non-stop service.

Realising the potential of the on-train passenger counting equipment being developed by Kevin and his team, he arranged for the fitting of it to some forty of West Anglia Great Northern’s trains.

His previous posts include Rolling Stock Manager, both for the old Network South East and for Railfreight, and operations positions, such as Operations Officer Liverpool and Area Manager Warrington.

The two Directors’ very different, yet complementary experiences, knowledge and skills give the company a unique advantage in being able to not only understand, but anticipate the customers’ needs; thereby delivering creative solutions to them.
